There isn't a second of Bruce Hornsby & the Range's The Way It Is that suggests it's a debut album. On the contrary, the record sounds like the culmination of a band's efforts over many years. The group has a distinct sound of its own, often led by Hornsby's bright piano chords and elastic tenor, with cohesive and evocative arrangements there is new age music here, as well as jazz and country, and the mixture is presented naturally by musicians who seem to have been playing with each other for some time. Similarly, the songwriting has its own flavor. Bruce Hornsby & the Range is an American band formed in 1984 and led by Bruce Hornsby born Bruce Randall Hornsby on November 23, 1954 in Williamsburg, Virginia , an American singer, virtuoso pianist, accordion player, and songwriter. They are best known for Hornsby's 1980s signature song The Way It Is, the top five hits Mandolin Rain and The Valley Road. At the same time, Hornsby is known for being a recurring collaborator with the Grateful Dead. Besides Hornsby, members of the Range have included David Mansfield guitar, mandolin, viol read more. Landarn
It may not indicate the indecision and underdeveloped nature of a debut album, but "The Way It Is" does feel lightly poetic and bold. Distinct and evocative as the sound on the album is, the soft, piano-led arrangements and production are not expressive of a band of neophytes only just hitting their stride; Bruce Hornsby and the Range are in their thirties and as such developed enough in terms of musical proficiency to create their own world on each track, exploring diverse subjects such as working-class angst, heartland romance to denigration of the Reagan administration. Laden with hooks and catchy melodies an overwhelming sense of reflective longing and sentimentality, "The Way It Is" is a deeply engaging and satisfying listen from start to finish, with the hit title track being surprisingly less memorable when compared with the undiscovered gem "Every Little Kiss", which is the album's lovely, enchanting standout, and my personal favourite deep cut.

A stellar debut that sounds more like a culmination of years of arduous toil within the music industry, Bruce Hornsby's jaded outlook and plaintive yearnings are further elevated by his elastic tenor voice and bright piano chords, which earnestly animate the album's brave yet appealing and emotionally resonant blue-collar stories.
