‘2018 Vinyl Art Restoration: Michael Mesker
Special thanks to Paul R. Dickinson Jr. for providing us with the original Trout Mask Replica cover photograph which we thought had been lost to time.
Production Manager: Mealanie Starks

2012 return by W.B. Note: The years in storage in Warners were not kind to Trout Mask Replica. The masters seriously suffer from oxide loss, primarily at the head of each of the four master reels. Fortunately, FZ had Dick Kunc make ‘safties.’ These actually sound better than the Originals and are in excellent condition but alas, incomplete. This edition of Trout Mask Replica is from the ZFT Vault protection copies, transferred at 96K 24B, except for Frownland and Hair Pie: Bake 2 which are from the original damaged master tapes transferred to direct digital at UMRK.
DSD workstation provided by Gus Skinas, Super Audio Center.
Vaultmeisterment & Transfers by Joes Travers, UMRK, 2012.

Mastered by Bob Ludwig, Gaterway Mastering, 2012.
Cut by Chris Bellman, Bernie Grundman Mastering, 2013.”

From the insert:
"Special Edition Vinyl LP
Out of print on vinyl for nearly ten years, this remaster was helmed by industry legend Bob Ludwig and cut by the estimable Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering. Utilizing crystalline-quality safety masters kept in the Zappa family vault for decades by the trustworthy Joe Travers, the audio here is positively glorious. Every last skronk breathes full life into the room. Every twisted guitar figure uncurls onto paths previously unpaved. Every last bark and howl shines resolute through the vast emptiness of your mind.

Previous countless Trout Mask Replica repressings have used scans of scans of scans of the cover image, but for Vault Package #36 the original Cal Schenke cover photo has been tracked down and reproduced at its clearest - its resolution from the original release in 1969. If you've only ever seen a jpg online of fuzzy, smeared-looking CD issues from the 90's, be prepared to be wowed by the fully engaging spectrum this iconic image casts. This 2xLP is pressed on heavyweight 180-gram fruitcake fish-scale colored vinyl for that full-on frenetic feeling."Gatefold cover. Images and text slightly blurry.

Captain Beefhearts 1969 masterpiece set an unmatched standard for avant-rock. after hearing this was one of the best albums of all time, i was anticipating listening to trout mask replica very much, and i finally got around to it. n nAfter two singles in the vein of popular rhythm n' blues, the group underwent dramatic changes in their musical style, culminating in the -produced album Trout Mask Replica, a work conceived and directed by - better known as. Trout Mask Replica, by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band. Atonal, sometimes singsong melodies jagged, intricately constructed dual-guitar parts stuttering, complicated rhythmic interaction - all of these elements float out seemingly at random, often without completely interlocking, while Beefheart groans his surrealist poetry in a throaty Howlin' Wolf growl. Despite this, Trout Mask Replica is considered one of the great rock albums of all time, as well as a defining release for experimental music. great sounding 77 pressing from canada, nice stereo (or stéréo)

This is a joke, right ?...captain beefheart & the magic band on this label ?there´s absolutely no decency left in the world.i would have been less surprised if it was a phil collins big hits on this label.

Nidor
What, Third Man records/the resurrected Bizarre Records (yes I know it was originally on Straight)?! Such a travesty /s

Gunos
Cool post. Well thought out and very helpful. Nine & Ten

Arar
This sounds incredible and I'm so glad to have added this to my collection.

spacebreeze
The records are both flat as a pancake and really quiet. Everything in this package is very high quality, (minus the little bit of poetry inserted by Jack White), if you're a fan of this album then I highly recommend buying this.

Xtani
Sitting this one out for a few years and I'm sure a black vinyl edition with the same CB cut will come out.TMR and Jack White can jog on. Still pretty disgusted the way the Zappa Family Trust continues to make this album almost impossible to buy new (either vinyl or CD/download)

Andromajurus
OliGreenaway There is a black version of the album being released for Record Store Day 2019. I just got mine home, happy that its the one with the same matrix as this, dont want the other one without the Chris Bellman initials. "Only" 35$ in store, but at least its a lot better than the 100$ price tags for this as well as the black one, people already jacking the prices on Discogs on the day of release.

For such an influential album you'd think they'd make it more readily available but nope. I really hope a mass produced pressing comes out soon.

TMR reissues TMRI'll be here all week, ladies and gentlemen

Eta
What I appreciate most about this release is how TMR pressed the vinyl dead silent with no surface noise or any obstructing background noise at all. This is useful on vocal tracks like 'The Dust Blows Forward 'N The Dust Blows Back' and the beginning of 'Orange Claw Hammer.' This also allows for the very fine and sometimes minimal details in the music to shine through and create a fantastic swirl of sound that really takes you on a trip. I would say Vilet's voice is the most prominently featured on the tracks which is very stinging and dynamic. The drums actually sound pretty good throughout the record too. Not overwhelmingly punchy but very lifelike nonetheless. The hi-hat really rattles and the cymbal crashes sizzle brilliantly. The music can get complicated at times which can hinder the clarity (only noticed this very minimally) but that's just due to the erratic mess of sounds the band contributes to the recordings. I also noticed that the mastering focuses on certain instruments more than others on some tracks. For example, on 'Moonlight on Vermont' the guitar is more up front and the rest of the music is more distant. This is how I believe it's supposed to sound, though it can obstruct some of the clarity of the finer details. But overall, the sound is full and bold and doesn't suffer from any unnatural compression. The music is definitely given room to breath and sounds more spacious than the digital tracks I have. I've never heard this on vinyl before but this definitely sounds good. I wouldn't say this lacks low end (the bass can sound quite nice at times) but the musical focal point definitely lies in the midrange, again I believe this to be true to the original recording, not due to the remaster. I like that the remaster stays true to the original recording without adding modern remastering techniques like beefing up the low end. The remaster, imo, enhances the intricate and complex details of the music which makes for a more engaging listening experience. I feel Chris Bellman did this right. Only small complaint is the tiny bit of warpage on the discs. I mean they did stuff a 7", multi-page booklet and several other inserts into a very compact gatefold sleeve. I feel the warpage will lessen over time if stored correctly (I've experienced this with other discs in the past) so I'm not too bummed. Super stoked to have this amazing package of one of the weirdest albums ever recorded. A solid remaster with a fantastically lively sound. Recommended to all Beefheart fans.

Otiel
Sunset Sound, maybe? Have to refer to LP and Drumbo's book (Gary Marker played bass on those tracks too, not Rockette Morton).

Rainbearer
A great summary of an amazing package. Never heard the record sound so great. The guitar lines are easily identifiable; snaking and slithering around each other like demented electric eels...I think the low end sounds a bit beefier (pun unintended) but not artificially so--like you said it's still very much in tune with the original release. I too am super stoked to own this amazing package. Fully sealed off of E-Bay for 80 quid. And there are folks selling it for £100+ unsealed with bits missing. This release made me love the record even more and I didn't think that would be possible!

Gugrel
No, Beefheart did, and only on one track. Which one escapes me at the moment I'll have to read the track notes in Through The Eyes Of Magic.

THOMAS
Nope. According to Frank, it was done to Beefheart's instructions. From “The Real Frank Zappa Book” :“Don demanded that the cymbals have pieces of corrugated cardboard mounted on them (like mutes), and that circular pieces of cardboard be laid over the drum heads, so Drumbo [ John French ] wound up flogging stuff that went "thump! boomph! doof!"”

Amhirishes
Zappa made Drumbo cover his from heads with cardboard. So the drum sound on TMR is peculiar to itself.

Ballalune
“Moonlight On Vermont” and “Veteran's Day Poppy” (I believe) were recorded at an earlier studio session than the majority of the other Trout Mask tracks. That explains the different sound found on those tracks.

LadyShlak
So I only got the vinyl, the tote bag, and the patch is that normal?? Does the other stuff ship separate?

Hiylchis
The 7" and other stuff should be inside the record sleeve.

Tygokasa
Agreed - the whole thing is wonderfully packaged with the exception of the excuciatingly bad poem by Jack White. Quite why he felt the need to include this piece of schoolboy nonsense we may never know. I assume that his ego got the better of him. "to dust he has returned back" and "the tape rewinds back" are inexcusable tautologies. That said, if that's the price we had to pay to get this set, I'm happy to have paid it.

Lucam
Not just TMR lyrics but the lyrics from many of his albums. I liked the eulogy. It felt sincere.

CrazyDemon
I know this. And I know his intentions were good but I just think it's really poor high school poetry and a real conceit to shove his poor quality art into such a stunning piece of someone else's art.

FLIDER
Bobby, it’s a play on words all based around the Captains lyrics as an ode from one of his admirers, who has very often publicly cited Don as an inspiration. Jacks epitaph is an amazing send off to acknowledge a legend.

Drelajurus
Personally I disagree, the poem was perfectly fine and fitting as a eulogy. You have to a appreciate his style of writing which is shamelessly full of references to this album's lyrics which I can understand some might find grating. In any case I agree the set as a whole is magnificent

Lo◘Ve
TMR went to a lot of trouble getting this out there. Dealing with ZFT, putting the whole package together - TMR on TMR is an ambitious release and they nailed it. The packaging is wonderful - all the grab bag goodies you could want or hope for. Mine weren't warped as it seems other buyers' were, but they needed a good cleaning before they were playable. I think that's a good rule of thumb for Third Man releases - wet clean them first.I have heard better releases of this set. I've owned maybe 25 different releases of this record over the years as well as CD copies. This one's good though - I'll take it.I also tend to shy away from multicolored vinyl because there is inherent noise due to the different colors molding and cooling at different rates. This one is better than most, but not entirely noiseless. Overall this is my favorite "Package" from Third Man so far. That's both in scope and execution. And it is what this record deserves. They generally do a good job of packaging/hype as well as engineering, and some of their releases are instant classics. But this one stands above.I'm very, very glad Jack did this. And I'm happy to own it.I'm giving it a 4 out of 5.

RyansGoldenRecords leonthepro Well the matrixes are put up and seem to indicate it at least. Certainly pressed by TMR and just *plated* by Pallas. Proof - Third Man Pressing Instagram has pre-release posts showing the finished product, and stating that it indeed was pressed in Detroit. Thats quite convincing then ;^)

I don't know - I already boarded and bagged it and put it up. The more often I take an LP in and out of its ziplock bag, the more damage it risks.

PBRStreetGang Hey man - To me the first German pressing - SMS 2222/3 - from 1969 is the best. This is infinitely arguable, but that's my opinion. It was on heavy 1960s vinyl, and maybe more care or expertise came into play. Rating releases is a dog's breakfast - it's difficult to determine why or how a certain release sounds better than another. This new one is real real good though. I think I still have a copy of SMS 2222/3 and I have it listed for sale, but I can't find it so I think it sold on eBay. Cheers - Alex I would have thought this would be best by far since CB (Chris Bellman) did the mastering. Also is this pressed at Pallas or TMR? It looks like Pallas so the vinyl should be of high quality.

Of all the releases you've heard, which would you say sounds the best? I know that this isn't exactly an audiophile recording, but do you have a preference?

Doriel
My copy (both discs) are extremely warped. Was able to get a replacement thankfully. Anyone else have this issue?

Hellblade
My A/B was significantly warped and C had some rather loud defect starting around Pena.

Vojar
I've gotten a few seriously warped records from Third Man (Trout was fine) and they have by far been the most friendly and easy to deal with getting them replaced.

Cae
Mine is unplayable! Both discs, hopefully Third Man will send me a replacement.

Corgustari
Got my replacement today. Happy to report that both discs are a huge improvement!
